Belinda and Benjamin are a very poor young couple living in the slums of Accra,
Ghana. They first came to the attention of John, who works to help the poor in any
way he can, when Benjamin saved a person who was drowning in the ocean there.
Benjamin's wife Belinda was pregnant and close to giving birth. We helped to get
Belinda in to get examined by a doctor. He advised that she go and stay with her
mother in a village outside Accra until the baby was born. We helped to pay for her
transportation to get to her mother and for the things she was told she would need
for the care of the coming child.
The doctor had said that her due date was the 28th of September and right on
schedule on that morning Belinda suddenly went into labor. The baby came so fast
that they didn't have time to get her to the hospital so the baby was born at her
mother's home. The baby, a little boy, was fine but Belinda lost so much blood that
she lost consciousness. They rushed her to the hospital where she remained in
serious condition for several days. After a blood transfusion and the proper care
she was told that she could go home once the bill was paid. (They do not release
the patient there until the bill is paid, which can lead to serious problems. And
the longer the patient stays the higher the bill becomes.) We managed to get the
necessary funds to her and she was finally released yesterday, the 5th.
The baby and mother are now home with Belinda's mother and all is well.
